Abstract
This thesis concerns the distinction of the elements of the Mise-en-scène and their function in Peter Jackson’s film “The Fellowship of the Ring”. This film is the first part of the trilogy “Lord of the Rings” and introduces the viewer into a fantasy world establishing the time and the place where the story unfolds. We are analyzing the visual narrative, while referring to certain director’s decisions regarding the camera and the editing fields, aiming at a deeper understanding of the Mise-en-scène and its elements. Music and sound design are very important in a movie production, but in this study we don’t focus on them. For the purpose of this research, seven scenes have been chosen carefully, based on various reasons which can be found before each scene in the second part of this thesis. Aiming at distincting the elements of Mise-en-scène with clarity, we place them into seven groups. This involves the setting, the props, the actors, the costumes (along with hair and make-up), the lighting, the colour, and finally the composition of the frame.
