Abstract
This Master's Thesis focuses on the research to highlight those symbols that have been used in Greece in the last centuries to rally the nation, mobilize it and homogenize it at the same time. It is sought to find the context that delimits the area in which the symbols with which the Greeks highlight their diversity, within the political and cultural environment in which they are integrated, as well as the way in which they use and treat the various symbols to act as unifying points, around which they rally for a common purpose. Specifically, will elements used in the composition of national identity be sought?
The aim of this Master's Thesis is to succeed in highlighting the role of symbols in the composition, structuring and formation of the identity of the Greek nation, over the past centuries. The inclusion of symbols and colors in the various flags that have been used over time in Greece communicate messages that unite the Nation and forge a solid identity based on religion, language, traditions, common history and finally the unity of space and time.
In all its manifestations, the Greek Revolution of 1821 was inextricably linked to the orthodox Christian faith, through which an attempt is made to link the liberation of the Greek race with religion. The revolutionaries, standing up to the Ottoman power and challenging its absolute authority, need to arm themselves materially and armor themselves mentally for the impending conflict with the mighty Ottoman Empire. While the choices for their material support are specific, their mental empowerment is sought in the Christian faith, which throughout the previous years of the Ottoman occupation stood as an unshakable support in maintaining their special identity, preventing their assimilation by the dominant Islamic community. Assimilation that the Greeks who embraced Islam did not avoid. This commitment to the Christian faith they express and distort through the use of various symbols and symbolism that they use in their documents declaring their rebellion, emblems and flags.
