Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC), as well as some key elements of library classification. Firstly, some concepts and categories of library classification will be presented, followed by the different types and the features of library classification schemes. In the second part, the DDC will be presented, starting with its history, its contents and its use and continuing in the third chapter with its structural elements and the steps followed for determining an accurate classification number. The assignment of call numbers will be studied as well, focusing in Cutter numbers in particular. Lastly, conclusions and future developments of the DDC will be presented, as well as some general conclusions regarding library classification.
