Abstract
With the constant and ever-growing use of the World Wide Web, millions of new data are being created every day, which are then stored in databases and servers located in various places all over the world. Amongst such a large volume of data, it is easy for somebody to lose important information if it is not archived in time. To address this problem, the Semantic Web was created as an extension to the World Wide Web and as a set of standards and formats used to enable a computer to contribute with its own abilities in the better retrieval of data, as these are now given their own descriptors, defined in such a way that even a machine will be able to recognize them.
This thesis was created within the context of describing how the ever-expanding phenomenon of the Semantic Web can be applied using the state of the Internet environment of modern day. Firstly, an ontology was created for the classification of video games, and next a web-based application to communicate with this ontology. Our goal was to present how could a similar Semantic Web ontology be applied in a common and modern web site, for easier and at the same time more approachable access to the contents of an ontology by a human user.
For the development of this semantic application, various tools and systems were involved, known to have a wide use in the production of a variety of other existing Semantic Web applications, including Protégé, an ontology editor software, Apache Jena, a server designed for storing and managing ontology data, and ReactJS, one of the leading frameworks for the development of optimized web applications. One notable point regarding this application’s creation, was to put emphasis into keeping its development process as simple as possible, with the purpose of allowing anyone, regardless of skill level, to replicate the required steps towards the construction of a similar application.
