Abstract
In this thesis, the contribution of musical improvisation to the process of composition is investigated. The aim of the thesis is to study the relationship between these two processes of music creation, focusing on investigating the composition’s professors and students perception on the importance of teaching improvisation and on its effects on the creativity and personal musical identity of young composers.
Therefore, this thesis contains two main parts. The first concerns the theoretical overview of the issue, where the concept of improvisation, its role and importance in the history of western art music, its relationship with composition and its importance in creative music pedagogy were studied. The second part of the thesis concerns the investigation of the issue, with the qualitative research method through interviews and focus groups. The sample consists of five professors and ten students majoring in music composition at a Greek university.
From the results of the research, it is made particularly evident by both composition’s professors and students, the multifaceted nature of improvisation as a form of expression and creation of music. Its essential value emerges either autonomously as an exercise of freedom, or as a tool for composition. It is found to be an integral part of a comprehensive musical education and a connection of musical knowledge, skills and experiences that reinforce creativity and contribute to the strengthening of personal musical identity.
