Abstract
The present work focuses on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. More specifically, we are mainly interested in the secondary education level and the application of AI to students with special educational needs (special education). At first, we discussed the importance of AI in education, the importance of special education and the use of AI in special education and its benefits. We then presented a review of quite recent scientific literature written in English in the areas of AI in general education and AI in special education. After that we focused on research dealing with the application of AI to some specific categories of students with special educational needs, such as: dyslexia, ADHD, autism, intellectual disability, hearing impairment and multiple disabilities. Almost all the research papers presented are very recent and with some very promising results which brings substantial hope that research has a long way ahead to go in the coming years.
